After a year which has seen the deaths of a horrendous number of brilliant musicians, creators, actors, writers and innovators, perhaps 2017 should begin with a tribute to those who survived the previous 12 months.
The year 2016 saw the loss of two of my favourite musicians in David Bowie and Prince and this was a bitter pill to swallow, but the long list contains many other wonderful artists and craftsmen such as George Michael, Alan Rickman, Glen Frey, Muhammad Ali, Gene Wilder, Carrie Fisher, Harper Lee, George Martin, Keith Emerson, Victoria Wood, Caroline Aherne, Leonard Cohen, Greg Lake and Rick Parfitt.
Without these people, the world is a duller place, but we should give thanks that we lived at the same time as these people. These are the ones who shaped our popular culture – our TV, our music and our lives. Thank you to all those listed above, and thank you to all those who keep creating, keep innovating and who continue to beautifully colour the world in which we live.
So we say goodbye and fuck you to 2016 and hope that this year contains less tear-stained obituaries than the last.
