Pete, our singer, has a friend who makes music videos. His name is Steve Fitzhulme and his company is called Two Blind Men. He knows Pete from way back and has done a number of videos for us and for Pete in the past. My view, and I think that lead guitarist Neil agrees with me, is that making videos should be way down on our list of priorities and that we should be focussing on playing live first and recording an album second, with making videos a distant third, but Pete is keen to utilise Steve as much as possible. We all realise that we’re very lucky to have a friend like Steve with his impressive skills and expertise, but time spent making videos is time we could and should be rehearsing or recording.
However, if you think of songs written for a band as shares owned in a company, then that makes Pete our major shareholder and as such he has more influence than the rest of us, plus he generally holds the microphone and that makes him the loudest aswell. He really wants to do the videos and he organises everything and its not like the rest of us strongly object. Doing videos is good fun and the result always makes us look cool, so we do videos. Besides it is good for Steve as it gives him another opportunity to showcase his talent.
The videos that Steve does for us are very good, and infintely better than anything we could do ourselves with our mobile phones and Windows Movie Maker, but they’re still very much a ‘nice to have’ and I’m sure that when we get out there playing live, it will help us to be able to point people to a YouTube channel that is full of good quality content. Not only that but Steve doesn’t want paying, trusting in his ‘future revenue’ clause and our potential success instead of immediate payment. That suits us perfectly as none of us are especially wealthy and a recent look at his website shows that we should be paying hundreds of pounds for his services.
Some of our videos
The music was recorded in autumn 2015 and the footage was filmed in March 2016. The finished video was completed and published to our website and YouTube channel a few days ago. Its meant to be a glorified recording of us rehearsing. The whole thing took about four hours to film, and Steve will have put in a fair few hours of post-production work and we think the result is very good. The song itself is probably our shortest one at under four minutes in length and always feels great fun to play.
Silent Dawn: This song was recorded by Pete’s previous band and we don’t currently play this song as part of our set. Whenever we try to tackle it, it just turns into a long slow jam and we never get it finished. We’re undecided about how to arrange it so we have decided to leave it alone. There’s only Pete in this video because none of the other members of the band were involved in making the music and after numerous cry-offs by various members of the band for the originally planned video shoot in Manchester, it was decided to make it all about Pete and the music instead of the whole band.
Cocaine Revolver and Lullaby are two more videos that were recorded and filmed with Pete’s previous band, but we have worked on the music and and we will be playing both these songs live when we get some gigs.
